Three measurements determine whether a bed bridge is likely to fit: mattress length, mattress height, and the width of the center gap. Measure the bed in its normal sleeping position before ordering.
1. Measure mattress length
Measure from the head edge to the foot edge of one mattress. A Twin mattress is commonly about 75 inches long. A Twin XL mattress is commonly about 80 inches long, and two Twin XL mattresses form the usual split king layout. Use the actual measurement because mattress construction and covers can vary.
2. Measure mattress height
Measure vertically from the bottom edge to the top sleeping surface, without compressing the mattress. If you use a topper, decide whether it will sit above or below the bridge system and include it when appropriate.
3. Measure the center gap
With both mattresses aligned, measure the open space at the head, middle, and foot. Record the widest point. If the width changes significantly, first check whether the frames or mattresses are out of alignment.
4. Test an adjustable base in motion
For a split adjustable base, repeat the gap check with the bed flat and in the positions you use most. Independent movement can change the seam and the tension on a fitted system.
Use the measurements to select a configuration
Choose 75 inches for two Twin mattresses and 80 inches for two Twin XL mattresses when the product specifications call for those sizes. Then confirm that the stated mattress-height and gap ranges match your measurements. If your gap falls outside the stated range, do not assume that a tighter strap will solve it.
